I'm a constituent, and I'm writing you today to urge you to put Access for All on the August 2017 ballot. It's an important proposal to increase arts, science and heritage education for all King County students, and ensure low-income and middle-class families can provide their kids with the same hands-on learning experiences as other families.

Over the last decade, state funding for arts, science and heritage opportunities has been cut in half. These cuts particularly hurt underserved communities — low-income schools, communities of color, seniors, and people with disabilities. It’s more important now than ever that we invest in arts, science and heritage education and access.

Access for All will dramatically increase arts, science and heritage education in our county’s public schools, both on-site and in the classroom, as well as provide students and families with free access to arts, science and heritage institutions — with an emphasis on underserved communities. It also includes substantial funds for student transportation to ensure that no student is denied access because of the costs of bus transportation.

Cultural access funding will also expand geographic access to arts, science and heritage for all King County residents. Our largest regional organizations — like the Museum of Flight, the Seattle Art Museum, the Woodland Park Zoo and others — serve residents in every part of King County. With more funding, our regional institutions can continue that commitment by expanding the programs they already offer, as well as expanding their programs into other parts of King County. Increased funding will also directly support local communities by providing funding for smaller, community-based organizations to bring people greater access to arts, science and heritage in their hometowns.

Access for All is a well-crafted approach to increasing arts, science and heritage education for public school students, and ensuring all families can afford to provide their kids with these experiences. Please give voters the chance to decide this August!
